Writing the rulebook for an open EV charging network
Technical documentation and onboarding for a national open network for EV charging built on the Beckn protocol, bringing vehicle makers, charge point operators and consumer apps onto one standard.
- Sector
- Electric mobility
- Scope
- 5+ vehicle makers, 10+ charge point operators, 10+ consumer apps
- My role
- Lead for technical documentation and stakeholder enablement
The problem
Finding and paying for a public EV charger in India means juggling a different app for every operator. An open network fixes that, the way UPI did for payments, if every participant follows the same rules.
The network runs on the Beckn protocol, so any consumer app can discover and book any operator's chargers. That promise depends on a precise technical specification, and on operators who can actually build to it.
The approach
Write the technical specification
Author the technical specification document and take it through four to five review cycles to final sign-off.Onboard charge point operators
Run workshops that walk operators through the specification and what they need to build.Define certification
Set the requirements every participant meets before going live, so the network behaves the same everywhere.Keep everyone on one reading
Bring vehicle makers, operators and consumer apps to the same understanding of the rules.
Who it serves
Charge point operators
One integration that puts their chargers in front of many apps.Consumer apps
Chargers from many operators through a single standard.Vehicle makers
A consistent charging experience for their customers.
The outcome
The specification reached final sign-off, with more than 5 vehicle makers, 10 charge point operators and 10 consumer apps aligned on it.
